ESSIC hosted a National Academy of Science’s Board on Atmospheric Sciences and Climate (BASC) workshop on sea ice loss and weather patterns this month.
The 2-day event entitled “Linkages between Arctic Sea Ice Loss and Mid-Latitude Weather Patterns,” focused on bringing together experts in the field to discuss the issue of rising global temperatures and sea ice loss and how the effects correlate to changing weather patterns across the densely populated region of the northern mid-latitudes. Studies show that this problem could worsen as ice melt continues to increase over the next few decades.
Organizational representation from NOAA, NASA, NCAR, the EPA, and a host of universities, comprised the local particaptory attendance for the event, which featured various talks and open panel discussions.
Meeting presentations and collective discussions were also broadcast online for those who could not participate locally. (Workshop presentations are now on-line at the following link.)
ESSIC Director and Council on the Environment Chair, Professor Antonio Busalacchi, also participated in the workshop in his capacity as incumbant chair of the Board on Atmospheric Sciences and Climate (BASC).
An NRC report summarizing the workshop discussions will be published by the end of this year.
