From April 14-19, several ESSIC and CISESS scientists traveled to Vienna, Austria to participate in the European Geosciences Union General Assembly. See the presentations below. Names of ESSIC scientists are bolded.
The National Weather and Climate Prediction Center (NCWCP) and UMD’s Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center (ESSIC) held a three-day mini-conference from February 27 to 29, a hybrid event held both at the ESSIC and online. The conference brought together ESSIC, CISESS, and NOAA scientists to share their presentations and posters from the recent AGU and AMS conferences. Peter Beierle was the conference organizer for UMD.
ESSIC scientist Sujay Kaushal and Ph.D. candidate Sydney Shelton hosted an “Ask Me Anything” (AMA) thread on Reddit on the /r/askscience subreddit. For two and a half hours, Kaushal and Shelton answered questions from the public regarding salinization and its impact on our planet.
The 6th GEO Blue Planet Symposium, organized by ESSIC/CISESS Scientist and GEO Blue Planet Executive Director Emily Smail was held from October 31 to November 2 in Seoul, Republic of Korea. The event, which brought together a global community focused on “Digital Solutions for Sustainable Oceans”, was a resounding success.
The Chesapeake Bay Stock Assessment Committee held a Blue Crab Data Workshop from Dec 5-7 to review sources of environmental and biological data that may help model the blue crab population for improving the management of this important marine resource and iconic Chesapeake Bay delicacy. Ron Vogel, ESSIC/CISESS senior faculty specialist, participated in the workshop as a subject matter expert on environmental data sources from satellites to be used in the modeling research.
As a now traditional part of the ESSIC end-of-year Holiday Party, two annual peer awards were presented to honor the year’s Best Paper and the Employee of the Year. This year, Director Ellen Williams presented these awards to Chelsea Parker, Assistant Research Scientist, and Brenda Torney, Payroll Coordinator.
Last month, CISESS hosted a field trip for a 6th grade class from New Hope Academy. Twenty
students and five adults visited the ESSIC offices and participated in educational activities led
by CISESS scientists. CISESS Coordinator Kate Cooney organized and coordinated the event.
Visiting Assistant Research Scientist Dr. Joseph Finlon was recently featured in a NASA Early Career Scientist Spotlight.
The ESSIC/CISESS Lightning Team – Guangyang Fang, Joseph Patton, Daile Zhang, and two students Damian Joseph Figueroa and Ashmita Pyne – went to celebrate the 8th Spooky Science Expo in Alexandria, VA. This was the first time CISESS/ESSIC scientists participated in this event.
Post-doctoral associate Dr. Cheng Da was recently featured in a NASA Early Career Scientist Spotlight.
