NOAA Daily Optimum Interpolation Sea Surface Temperature

ESSIC/CISESS Visiting Research Scientist Tom Smith has co-authored a new paper in the Journal of Climate published online on June 17th. This article, titled “Assessment and Intercomparison of NOAA Daily Optimum Interpolation Sea Surface Temperature (DOISST) version 2.1”, shows the relative quality of a NESDIS SST analysis of NOAA Daily Optimum Interpolation Sea Surface Temperature (DOISST) version 2.1. The paper shows that the current version of the analysis has skill comparable to other global SST analyses.

Shuiwang Duan, Department of Geology and Department of Environmental Science and Technology Assistant Research Scientist, and Sujay Kaushal, ESSIC and Department of Geology Associate Professor, are co-authors on a new paper in Applied Geochemistry titled “Changes in concentrations and source of nitrogen along the Potomac River with watershed land use”. Remote Sensing of Night-time Light

ESSIC/CISESS Scientists Xi Shao, Sirish Uprety and Wen-hui Wang are contributors to a new book, Remote Sensing of Night-time Light, to be released on August 10th. Their chapter is on the assessment of straylight correction performance for the JPSS Visible/Infrared Imager Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) day/night band using Dome-C and Greenland under lunar illumination. This book captures key methodological issues associated with pre-processing night-time light data, documents state of the art analysis methods, and explores a wide range of applications.

Convection Parametrization and Multi-Nesting Dependence of a Heavy Rainfall Event over Namibia

ESSIC Associate Research Scientist Toshihisa Matsui is a co-author on a new international paper in Climate titled “Convection Parametrization and Multi-Nesting Dependence of a Heavy Rainfall Event over Namibia with Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) Model”. In the study, Matsui and international co-authors investigate the effects of using multi-nests and a convection scheme, numerical weather prediction models, on the simulation of a heavy rainfall event over the north-western region of Kunene, Namibia.

Coral Reef Watch’s Daily Global 5km Satellite Coral Bleaching Heat Stress Monitoring Products Contribute to New Allen Coral Atlas Bleaching Layer

NOAA Coral Reef Watch (CRW)’s operational daily global 5km satellite coral bleaching heat stress products are being used by Arizona State University (ASU) and its partners to create a new Bleaching layer (currently in beta status) in the Allen Coral Atlas. The Bleaching layer, which is updated every two weeks, detects variations in coral reef brightness using high-resolution Planet Dove satellite visible-band imagery and an advanced algorithm, to indicate whether reefs are experiencing heat stress, such as that from marine heatwaves, and bleaching.
